1813 Antique NYC, 12 Mile Marker Signpost

Here's a bit of history. The brown stone is a mile marker that means you're 12 miles from City Hall. We've read that many suspect it was cut in 1813! Here's a link to a fantastic article with more photos and images: myinwood.net/the-twelfth-milestone
  1. Can you count to 12?
  2. Point to the brown stone.
  3. Do you have a favorite rock?

Alphabet City Alphabets, Our NEW Signs Book!

We're very happy and proud to announce our brand new book of sign photographs! The second book in our early literacy series, "Alphabet City Alphabets," is made of pictures taken only within the boundaries of the Alphabet City neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City, New York, U.S.A.

Available at this link: Amazon.com/dp/1794381791

Everybody loves to read street signs. This environmental print photo book has over 70 unique pictures of signs.

The images in this book are meant to inspire discussion, spark an interest, and build a foundation of knowledge for new readers that will serve them for the rest of their lives. A few basic questions can lead to hours of happy discussion about intention, danger, safety, and interpretation.

We like to ask our toddler simple things like, "What colors do you see?", "What is that word?", "Can you say those letters?", "What shape is that?", "Can you count all of the ...(windows, birds, cars, trees... etc.)?", "What number do you see?" This type of learning is easy and very effective. Soft and simple repetition of the basics helps us to remember what we need to know. Keeping our lessons fun makes us want to repeat the exercises.

We learn from what we see and we see letters & numbers everywhere. Environmental print is everyplace and it's a special aid for everything from finding 100% whole wheat bread to navigating cross-country road trips! Interpreting the language we see all around us is important for anyone who wants to accomplish anything.
